Description

Tamarron was originally developed in the late 1970s in the north Animas Valley on property that had been grazing in pastureland for many years. This very rugged valley was cut by glaciers years ago and is provided for thousand foot high cliffs along the west and hills and valleys all the way down to the Animas River to the east. It’s along that river where the narrow gauge railroad makes its daily trek from Durango to Silverton. The original Tamarron property is approximately 800 acres in size and included an 18 hole championship golf course complete with health club, indoor outdoor heated pool, tennis courts and nearly 400 condominium units that were used as both hotel rooms and vacation properties for their owners. I was raised in Michigan and played golf regularly and that state is known for beautiful golf courses. I will tell you that in my opinion the Tamarron course is in the top 3 most beautiful golf courses I’ve ever played on. The main lodge contains 140 condominium units and there are another 240 townhome type condominiums scattered around the original 18 hole golf course. Condominium units range in size from 528 ft. to 2232 ft. In the 1990s there were some single-family lots developed, most of which are already built on.

Glacier Club: In 2002 Tamarron was purchased and a very ambitious plan was put into place. The Arthur Hills 18 hole golf course was renovated by Design Workshop, Troon Golf and Golf Works. Nine more holes of golf were added and a 20,000 ft. clubhouse and beautiful outdoor heated pool have been completed. The Glacier Club is an equity membership facility and when you buy a home or lot from the developer your initiation fee (approximately $60,000) is included in the price. In the Glacier Club section the developers are adding 170 luxury townhomes and duplexes and about 170 luxury homes sites. The main restaurant at Tamarron was also renovated and it is open to the public. The clubhouse and the golf course in the Glacier Club are entirely private and not open to the public. The developers are currently working on a land exchange with the San Juan National Forest to acquire additional ground for another 9 holes of golf as well as more homes sites. Nearly all of the homeowners in the Glacier Club use their properties as 2nd homes or vacation homes.

Developing property in the glacier created valley can be quite expensive because blasting was required to install all of the underground utilities, foundations, and even sides of cliffs in order to put in roads. Spectacular views are in every direction whether you want to have a golf course lot or a home site on top of a ridge with views up or down the Valley. All utilities are underground of course and include central water, central sewer, electric, telephone and natural gas.
